Who is Robert Lupo of Glass Wolf Studio?
The Dichroic artist Robert Lupo is the only student from the world renown artist Lady Victoria who has been fusing her masterpieces for over a decade. Her unique art has been sold and appeared in museums and galleries around the world. Her instruction in the art came from apprenticing with world renowned Dichroic artist Larry Gruda. Robert quickly developed an expert eye in color combination which has earned him a well earned reputation in the art world as a Master Dichroic Artist.
Roberts art is worn around the world and on such famous people as Steve Wozniak the founder of Apple Computer!
Robert always hand picks the glass for his creations meticulously. He searches for just the right shades, colors and effects trying many combinations of layers to bring forward his desired artistic vision.Robert can spend weeks working on a single piece of artwork to get it just right making sure that it will have the effect he envisions both with house lighting and in sunlight. Each and every creation in his studio is designed, laid out and fused and only when it passes the strict standard of the artist him self, is it released to the public. Any project not meeting these strict standards are immediately destroyed and never to be seen.
Photos of his masterpieces don't give them justices as it is impossible for the camera to pick up the three dimensional effect viewed in person and how the colors swim when you move and how they dance with colors.
Each and every piece of art is truly unique and even when similar designs are created, no two will ever be alike making each artistic creation a one of a kind collector's piece. Each and every art piece is hand signed and dated by the artist him self assuring its value and authenticity.
What is Dichroic Glass?
Dichroic Glass is a multi layer coating placed on glass by using a highly technical vacuum depositing process. Quartz Crystal and Metal Oxides are Vaporized with an electron beam gun in a vacuum chamber completely void of air and the vapor then floats upward and attaches and condenses on the surface of the glass in the form of a crystal structure.
Our colors have as many as 30 layers of these materials, yet the thickness of the total coating is approximately 35 millionths of an inch. The coating that is created is very similar to a gemstone "like an opal" and by careful control in thickness, different colors are obtained. One of the truly amazing aspects of Dichroic art is how the colors shift from movement and light angles crating dazzling displays of three dimensional vibrant color effects.
What is the process?
Each project goes through a design phase requiring hours of work matching glass and researching the perfect combinations. Each layer of glass is carefully placed and stacked in just the perfect location inside the Kiln a process that in it's self can take hours. The Kiln is then carefully heated to 1500 degrees Farenhight so that the glass layers will fuse together and then are very carefully cooled to avoid the cracking of the glass.Several art pendants use a special process that is used prier to the fusing to create a slider hole in the bead allowing the use of a chain or cord. This process avoids drilling the glass, which could weaken the glass. The slider hole is a preferred method than gluing on a chain backing which could break off and loose your valuable piece of art. Robert uses special adhesive for his silver chain backings on some of his pendants to avoid the loss of these works of art. This adhesive has shown to be very effective in preventing loss.
